Potato storages that are designated to receive seed in late winter or early spring can be adversely impacted if CIPC is used in the fall to treat commercial potatoes prior to using the storage area for seed. The solid CIPC crystals may remain in the storage, leaving a sprout inhibiting residue in the building for many months. For commercial storages that are to receive seed later in the year, storage managers have found that treating potatoes with a dormancy enhancer—instead of CIPC—results in better overall storage management and avoids potential seed vigor issues.
