In plant science, dormancy has been defined as 'the temporary suspension of visible growth of any plant structure containing a meristem' (Lang et al. 1987). Dormancy may occur in true seeds, but also in vegetative tissues, e.g., in axillary buds of perennial plants, especially in temperate regions, and in bulbs, rhizomes or tubers. Several types of dormancy have been described.
