POTATO CROP IN FRONT LINE ON POVERTY

The United Nations has declared 2008 to be International Year of the Potato (IYP). The move is a recognition of the pivotal role which the crop can and should play in reducing food shortages throughout the developing world. What will you do to help promote such a noble cause? The UN Resolution which was the precursor to the IYP initiative affirms the need to focus attention on the role the crop can play in providing food security and eradicating poverty. Potatoes can also help towards achieving internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is the UN body charged with co-ordinatinq IYP activities.
