CALL FOR POLL PUTS COUNCIL ON STANDBY

Tim O'Malley has strong reservations about the effectiveness of the Potato Council, so much so that during April he was canvassing support for a ballot to determine its future. Tim O'Malley is hoping that should the Potato Council survive his call fora vote it will at least come out of the process more effective and financially sound. The alternative, he proposes, is that its levy income and responsibilities should pass into other, more appropriate, hands. Mr O'Malley is group managing director ofNationwide Produce pic, a business established in the 1970s which trades 85,000 tonnes of potatoes a year along with 60,000 tonnes of onions and 40,000 tonnes of carrots. Nationwide has interests in the wholesale, retail, food service and processing sectors, it farms 150 hectares in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire and also has a dedicated grower group.
