摘要

Through this stimulating text, Gordon Hutner explores a rock-strewn terrain thatspreads over the thin ice on the ponds of academe. Founding editor of the journalAmerican Literary History, Hutner (University of Illinois at Urbana) challengescontemporary literary scholars to review, for both research and for classroom study, largely forgotten mainstream American fiction written during the mid-twentiethcentury. These are the thousands of novels that have not become, "linguisticartifacts," those authors of novel-length fiction ticketed, processed and passed intothe canon of classic American literature, course survey texts and classroom readingassignments.
