Interstellar ices are formed in dark prestellar cores in molecular clouds during the accretion of gas molecules onto dust grains. Until recently, the chemical processes on grains have been studied with surface reactions only. We present a model for chemical processes inside the icy grain mantles (Kalvāns & Shmeld 2010). It is assumed that chemical reactions are occurring on the surface of cavities, or pores, inside bulk ice. The porosity of interstellar ice analogs has been demonstrated by laboratory experiments (e.g., Palumbo 2006).
