A case of schizophrenia with Meige syndrome induced by long-term aripiprazole successfully treated with perospirone.

Meige syndrome is an idiopathic dystonia characterized by symmetrical blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia (Meige, 1910). Although the causes of this syndrome are unknown, it has been reported to be induced by certain kinds of drugs such as antipsychotic drugs and dopamine agonists, cerebellar degeneration, basal ganglia dysfunction, and brain tumors (Hayashi et al., 1998). There have been several case reports of emerging Meige syndrome after the use of antipsychotic drugs, including typical and atypical antipsychotics. Here we present a case of Meige syndrome evoked by long-term aripiprazole administration, which was successfully treated with perospirone.
