Probable psychosis associated with levetiracetam: a case report.

Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medication approved for add-on treatment of partial epilepsy. Though, its exact mechanism of action is not known, it may entail specific binding to a 90-kDa membrane protein restricted to neuronal cell types, blockade of zinc and beta-carbolines from interrupting chloride influx in the 7-aminobutyric acid and glycine receptors (Rigo et al., 2002). Controlled trials have reported a wide margin of tolerability with infrequent and mild adverse events. The benefit/side-effect ratio seems favorable, with one study reporting 60% 1-year retention rate, and 38.6% of patients having a 50% reduction in seizure frequency (Krakow et al., 2001).
