Positive reinforcing effects of flupirtine--two case reports.

Flupirtine is currently in clinical use because of its analgesic properties. It is thought to act by functional N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonism via voltage-independent potassium channels Hummel et al. (1991).In contrast to other studies (Bisaga and Evans, 2004; Herrmann et al., 1987; Preston et al., 1991; Scheef, 1987) and animal studies (Sofia et al., 1987) which report no or only moderate abuse liability of flupirtine, we present here two cases in which flupirtine treatment is associated with pleasurable and reinforcing effects.
