Alkali producers seek import duty cut on captive power plants

The chlor alkali industry has sought reduction in import duty of captive power plants and membrane cell plants among others in an effort to improve the competitiveness of the industry in the globalised environment. It its' pre-budget memorandium submitted to the Finance Ministry the apex body of the industry, the Alkali Manufacturers' Association of India (AMAI) has stated that the fortunes of the industry have taken a severe beating in the last two years or so, and that the near crisis situation has been principally precipitated by a single factor - the escalating cost of power.
