Steve Simon's book "Heroines & Heroes:Hope,HIV and Africa," documents the people of Africa as they face the brutal pandemic of AIDS.It is a book about humanity,not statistics.For his next project,"Grandmother Spirit," Simon puts the emphasis on hope in positing that the AIDS crisis in Africa is not a lost cause,that action is making a difference."Right now,Sub-Saharan Africa has an overwhelming number of children orphaned by AIDS-an estimated 12 million-and it is the grandmothers who have stepped into the breech," says Simon,a Canadian-born,award-winning documentary photographer.
