Comparing the use of an Accident and Emergency Department by children from two Local Authority Gypsy sites with that of their neighbours

Gypsy and Traveller children are a discrete group of children who are part of British society, but who often live in situations that are markedly different from their contemporaries. Although recognized as a minority ethnic group, they do not appear separately in data looking at socioeconomic variations, nor are their needs considered separately for health and social services strategic planning purposes. However, as suggested by Van Cleemput, the circumstances of their living conditions and situation are such that as a community they experience more socioeconomic deprivation than the settled population in social classes IV and V.
