Emerging issues, challenges and aspirations in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in China.

Over the last three decades, as the worldwide HIV epidemic has progressed, China has significant advances in HIV epidemiologic surveillance programmes, preventive services and medical treatments that improve the quality of life for many, although not all, people living with HIV. Scaling up HIV prevention education and testing has raised awareness among different at-risk populations. The national HIV policy has also become more inclusive and comprehensive. Multidisciplinary research has expanded our understanding of the size, trend, risk factors, and underlying causes of HIV transmission in China. Yet the epidemic is not fully under control. Rather, epidemic trend data demonstrates that for the populations of men who have sex with men (MSM) the incidence continues to rise (see Lau et al. in this issue). The rapid socio-cultural transformation in the country is sustaining the burden of the unabated epidemic.
