Declaring a precedent usually betrays an overweening ego or a series of unshared assumptions. But not always. We would like to establish a precedent for Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases (PCVD), one which will be honored in the future and always valued. For the first time since its founding in 1958, the editorial team is relinquishing its position rather than bequeathing it. We are thrilled to inaugurate this and assume few will interpret our new standard in any but a most positive light. The founding editor, Dr. Charles Friedberg died in an automobile accident in 1972; Dr. Edmund Sonnenblick died in 2007, still on the masthead; and our friend, colleague and immediate predecessor, Dr. Michael Lesch died suddenly in 2008. We wish Dr. Carl Lavie and his team a great run filled with unique and imaginative innovations but in this one thing, to follow in our footsteps!PCVD has always enjoyed the respect of its audience. Its growing impact factor attests to this. We think we have found a model that is successful and hope to see the journal's influence continue to increase.
