Microbial Degradation of Nitrocellulose in a Composting Environment

The microbial degradation of nitrocellulose investigated in a composting environment appeared not to be straightforward. Depending on the degree of esterification the large nitrate groups may sterically hinder the enzyymatic hydrolysis or effectively block it.
