Fauna Meets Flora in Florida: Marryinq a Traditional Zoo with a botanical Garden

In 2002, community members approached the Jacksonville Zoo with a bold, unique, and compelling idea—marrying our traditional zoo with a public garden. Two years later, the Zoo's visionary former director, Dennis Pate, recruited Cindy Tyler, principalof Terra Design Studios, to create a two-phase master plan and lead the design of the gardens. Constructed from 2004 to 2009, Phase One gardens are integrated into the Zoo. Phase Two includes an adjacent twelve-acre garden bordering the Trout River. Conceived as a major destination garden in its own right, the garden will boast a visitor center, formal gardens, a tropical conservatory, native plant gardens, an event garden, and an orangery.
