The workshop from which all the articles in this focused issue of Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology are derived ended with a wide-ranging discussion of the nature of systems biology and its underlying principles—touching on complexity, theprogramming and database metaphors, dynamic modelling and underlying concepts. To give a flavour of the debate, we present here a lightly edited version of that discussion, which started with a brief commentary by Denis Noble on his ten Principles of Systems Biology (Noble, 2008).
