Deep Brain Stimulation for Treatment Resistant Depression:The Role of the Ventral Capsule/Ventral Striatum

Deep brain stimulation is a reversible, neurosurgical procedure consisting of implanting electrodes at specific anatomical locations. These electrodes then deliver electrical impulses of variable intensity and frequency. This technology was initially developed for treatment-refractory neurologic disorders and chronic pain. Since the early findings in the 1960s, when DBS of the ventro-lateral thalamus could alleviate tremor, the therapeutic use of chronic DBS at different targets has been developed for other treatment-refractory movement disorders as well as epilepsy.
