A public health approach to narrowing mental health disparities

In 2005, in an effort to address persistent health inequities both among and within countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (Commission). The purpose of the Commission was to lead global efforts to advance health equity by summarizing the evidence on how the structure of societies, through myriad social interactions, norms, and institutions, affect population health, and how governments and the field of public health can affect those structures to enhance health equity. The work of the Commission was guided by three questions.
