Profitability from vegetable based crop rotations

Punjab has been at the forefront of green revolution I in India. But for the last two decades, Punjab agriculture has been facing decline in agricultural productivity of major crops and escalating cost of inputs has accentuated the problem of declining farm incomes. Punjab Government has been emphasising on shifting 85 thousand hectares of area from paddy towards fruits and vegetables to save the precious underground water. This can be possible if comparative profitability of vegetables somehow compete with paddy-wheat crop rotation. But most of the vegetables are highly perishable and there is wide fluctuation in their prices depending upon their production. So, keeping this in view it becomes imperative to investigate the viable crop rotation of vegetables which can be one of the alternatives to shift some area from paddy.
