Maize is the third most important cereal in the world. Maize is the second important kharif cereal crop and it occupied 129 thousand hectares, with production of 475 thousand tonnes during 2012-2013 in the State. The growing of maize in August produces higher productivity as compared to kharif sown maize due to its longer duration and less attack of insect/ pest and diseases. So, its cultivation in August helps to diversifying the rice-wheat cropping system in the Punjab.
