Healthy nursery is necessary to get higher paddy yield

Mid to end May is the optimum time of sowing paddy for all recommended varieties. For getting maximum yield and timely vacation of the field for the succeeding crop, transplanting should be done at right time.Healthy nursery is a key factor for achieving higher paddy yield. The main problems of paddy nursery are deficiency of nutrients, weed infestation and lesser plant population per unit area. These problems sometimes become so severe that the entire paddy nursery gets failed. Therefore, followingimportant points should be taken into consideration while sowing paddy nursery:Punjab Agricultural University has released several innproved varieties of rice for cultivation in Punjab. Only recommended varieties should be selected for sowing because un-recommended varieties are highly susceptible to several biotic stresses. PR 121and PR 122 are resistant to all presently prevalent pathotypes of bacterial blight pathogen in the state. PR 123 is a recently released paddy variety, which have 7.4 per cent higher yield than PR 111. For short duration varieties, go for PR 115, which matures in 125 days after seeding.
