Growing improved varieties of sugarcane and adopting improved agronomic techniques play a pivotal role in getting higher yield. Sugarcane is an important commercial crop and in Punjab it is grown, both as autumn and spring season crop. However, the spring crop occupies larger area. Spring crop is generally planted after harvesting of potato, green pea, rabi fodder and oil seed crops from mid February onwards. Its planting is delayed at times even up to the month of May after harvesting of wheat. Being a perennial crop, it remains in the field 2-3 years and its agronomic practices are different from those of other crops. Adoption of improved agronomic techniques plays a pivotal role in realization of potential yield of the crop. Growing improved varieties is the foundation of a good crop.
