Recommended Varieties of Wheat and Triticale for late sown Conditions

THE Punjab Agricultural University recommends wheat varieties for timely sown (irrigated), late sown (irrigated) and rainfed conditions. The three varieties namely PBW 226, PBW 138 and TL 1210 (Triticale) for late sown (irrigated) and two varieties PBW 299 and PBW 175 for rainfed conditions are also recommended. Punjab produces about 23 percent of the production from only 14 percent of the wheat area of the country. During 1995-96 wheat was cultivated on an area of 8205 thousand acres with productionof 12724 thousand tonnes and yield of 1551 kg per acre. Because of this high productivity, the Punjab State has been contributing over 60 percent to Central Procurement Pool during the last many years. Owing to increased production of wheat and enlargement of its buffer stocks, the Government of India permitted the export of 5 lakh tonnes of wheat during 1995-96.
