Selenium poisoning (selenosis) is a major problem in some region of Punjab. Generally it occurs in areas where the selenium content of soil is high, generally in the range of 1-6 ppm. Soils of some area may contain even higher values of selenium i.e.upto 1200 ppm. In Punjab, selenosis is of considerable importance in Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahar districts but it may also occur in other parts of state. The selenium poisoning in livestock generally occur from ingestion of plants which accumulate the selenium in high concentration.
