Pomegranate--A Potential Fruit for Punjab

POMEGRANATE is one of the imporant fruit crops of semi-ariJ regions of India. It is precocious, drought tolerant and is widely adapted. It gives high returns with low maintenance cost. Maharashtra is the leading state in pomegranate cultivation in thecountry. Kolhar rtgion of this state is particularly famous for growing quality pomegranate where, Musket is being grown on a commercial scale. Generally, pomegranate orchards are of seedling in origin and have heterozygosity to a great extent. Gancsh is another cultivar being grown by vegetative rneans in Pooiu area, whereas, Dholka is the promising cultivar of Gujrat State.
