Partap--An Early Ripening Peach Cultivar

PEACH is the fifth important fruit grown in the state of Punjab. It occupies an area of 3800 hectares with a total production of 56880 tonnes. The bulk of area is under cultivars like Flordasun, Shan-i-Punjab and Sharbati. Although Flordasun is the earliest ripening cultivar and its fruits are available from end of April to mid May, yet it has got poor shipping quality and hence cannot be transported to distant markets. The fruits of other cultivars like Shan-i-Punjab are ready for harvesting from 2nd week of May to fourth week of May whereas Sharbati and Khurmani aie very late ripening cultivars. Their fruits are susceptible to damage by the monsoon rains and are highly prone to the attack of fruit-fly. Thus there was a need to develop superior cultivars free from these drawbacks for cultivation in the Punjab. As a result of peach improvement programme, a new variety of peach named as 'Partap' was released for commercial cultivation in the Punjab and have been adopted by the selective growers of the state.
