In Punjab, potato is grown in 87.2 thousand ha area with 21.9 lakh tones of production. Productivity of potato in Punjab (25.11 ha~(-1)) is higher than most of the states except West Bengal and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. The state has established itself as a seed producing state in the country and supplies about 75% of the total seed potato required at the national level. Due to the availability of aphid free period from October tor December, the climate in the state is ideal for production of virus free seed potato. The districts of Jalandhar, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur account for more than 50% of area under potato cultivation in the state. Potato in Punjab is produced for three purposes viz. ware or table potato (38%), seed potato (60%) and processing potato (2%). Most of the potato produced in the state is supplied as seed potato to the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
