Check Insect Pests of Rabi Pulse Grops for Higher Return

I N India, over a dozen pulse crops are grown over an area about 23 million hectares and contributing about 12.5 million tonnes of grains to the food pool of the country. Yield levels of these crops are not very encouraging and average yield of pulsesin the country is little over 500 kg per hectare. One of the major constraints for the low yield of pulse crops is the extensive damage caused by the insect pests. More than 250 insect pests attack these pulse crops. However, amona them over two dozen are most serious and take a heavy toll of the produce. About half a dozen insect pests cause lot of damage to rabi pulse crops, grown in Punjab state. Brief description of these pests alongwith their control is mentioned below. It is therefore most essential that these pests must be checked well in time so that productivity of rabi pulse crops is raised to a higher desirable remunerative level.
