Technical and Economical Aspects of Rabbit Farming

India, prior to 1960, no efforts were made by the Govt. or private breeders to introduce rabbit breeding for meat, fur and wool production in a planned way. However, some isolated efforts were made by some private enterprisers to rear Angora rabbits which could not create any impact on the common farmers. But in 1990 the Punjab State Government gave thought to this profitable enterprise and sanctioned a scheme "Creation of facilities for rearing of rabbits for meat and fur" to Punjab Agricultural University. With this scheme the strength of Rabbits increased from negligible to twenty five thousands in 3-4 years. Hence Punjab becomes third Angora Wool producing state in India after H. P. and J&K.
