Bhupinder singh:A successful mariqold grower

A 37-year old Bhupinder Singh has made great strides in marigold cultivation through his innovative approach. S. Singh, son of Sh. Gurnam Singh and a resident of Barnaia district, is a successful marigold grower who lives in a joint family that owns 20 acres of land. His farm is located at village Pakhoke which is 15 kilometers from Barnaia city. He grows marigold in one acre, the rest being under traditional crops such as wheat, rice and fodder. His journey to success began in 2001-02 when his farmworker got seedlings of marigold from a neighbouring field and transplanted these on bunds in the field. This resulted in a good production of marigold in his field and S.Singh earned Rs. 7000/- by selling the flowers. Since then, he is engaged in marigold cultivation. Initially, he grew marigold in one-half to one kanal (250-500 sq.m) area, but since 2005-06, he is growing this crop in one acre field. He sells his flowers to florists in Barnaia only and has never searched for other bigger markets of Punjab state. During' last few years, he was able to earn a net income of Rs. 1, 50,000/- to 1,75,000/- from his one acre field.
