Yellow rust disease can cause tremendous losses and poses a serious threat to the wheat sown in Punjab state. On an average, the disease causes annual losses to the to the tune of Rs. 236 crores in the sub-mountainous districts alone. Yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis is threatening wheat cultivation in the state for the past 4-5 years. In Punjab, disease initially appears in the sub-mountainous districts of Ropar, Hoshiarpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Gurdaspur. If left unchecked, thedisease can cause tremendous losses and pose a serious threat to the wheat sown in plains of the state as well.
