Agricultural research systems throughout the world are facing new challenges and prospects and India is no exception. A reassessment and reappraisal of its agricultural planning has been underway since the country gained Independence. The establishment of State Agricultural Universities in the sixties was a revolutionary step aimed at improving the rural community through scientific research. As a consequence, a chain of agricultural universities were established in different states of the country during early sixties. Punjab Agricultural University came into being at Ludhiana in 1962. This was the third agricultural university to be established in India after G. B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology at Pant Nagar (UP) followed by Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology at Bhubaneswar (Orissa).
