The continuous decline of underground water level has serious implications such as increased cost of deepening wells, installation of submersible pumps and increase in power consumption. Following measures should betaken for efficient use of water inpaddy. PADDY is the major kharif crop of Punjab. In Punjab, 67 per cent of irrigation water is used for paddy and the contribution of underground water towards it is 80%. The under ground water level is going down rapidly from last many years in centraldistricts of Punjab. The reasons for decline in water table are increased area under paddy, early transplanting of paddy and growing of long duration varieties. The continuous decline of underground water level has serious implications such as increasedcost of deepening wells, installation of submersible pumps, increase in energy (electricity) consumption and deterioration of underground water quality. Over exploitation of water has declined the water table depth below 10 meters in 90 per cent of the area in central Punjab. Situation is expected to be worse in the coming years if it continued like this. Keeping in view the safe future of coming generations the following measures should be taken for efficient use of water in paddy.
