摘要

The growth in horticultural industry is hindered due to enormous post-harvest losses which occur at each stage of handling chain. The perishable nature of fruit crops, lack of post-harvest infrastructure and climatic factors result glut in market leading to crash of prices. India ranks first in vegetables and second in fruit production in the world. India with its current production of around 190 million metric tons (MT), accounts for about 8 per cent of the world's fruit production and about 15 percent of the world's vegetables production. Punjab is also an important state for fruits and vegetables with annual production of 3.83 MT.
