The transplanting of maize is a useful practice where the fields are not vacant for direct sowing of winter maize, mustard, gram and wheat. Farmers can grow maize nursery in small piece of land for raising winter maize crop successfully. In Punjab, the cultivation of winter maize was recommended for first time in 1983. But due to the long duration and severe frost, the area under winter maize did not increase. The duration of the winter maize can be reduced through transplanting of the seedlings, which can also save maize from severe frost. Transplanting of maize is particularly more suitable after the harvest of the late paddy, toria, potato and early harvest of the crops like sugarcane or as a companion crop with autumn sugarcane.
