THE Punjab is a small state having 1.5 per cent geographical area and 2.9 per cent net sown area of the country. It has the unique distinction of producing 22 per cent wheat, 9 per cent rice and 24 per cent cotton of the country. Even on a global scale, Punjab's geographical area is just 0.03 per cent while it produces 2 per cent wheat, 1 per cent rice and 2 per cent cotton of the world production of these commodities.
