OIL seeds arc an important part of Indian diet. These includes rape seeds, groundnut, sesamum, and safflower. Among rape seeds, raya is an important rabi oil seed crop grown under both irrigated and unirrigated conditions in Punjab. Due to dominance of rice-wheat rotation in irrigated areas of Punjab, its cultivation has generally been pushed to coarse textured soils which are expected to be deficient in sulphur. The use of high analysis S-free fertilizers, inadequate use of FYM and other manures, intensive cropping and cultivation of high yielding varieties also contribute towards increasing incidences of sulphur deficiency in the state. Its deficiency is accelerated in canal irrigated areas or areas prone ;to heavy and wide spread or a few torrential rains.
