Dairy farming in Punjab

There are one crore bovine heads in Punjab. Out of this, only 11.2 lac cows and 32 lac buffaloes are breedable. Such a large population of unproductive animals is neither justified economically. A strategy has to be developed to reduce the number of unproductive animals. THE Punjab Government, at present, is laying much emphasis on diversification in agriculture, and dairying fits well in this diversification process, as it does not require complex technology and skill.
