Grow peas in kandi areas of Punjab

The peas grow best in sandy loam, well drained, friable and moderately acidic soils. Incidently this requirement is nearly met in bet and kandi areas of Punjab. GARDEN pea as a vegetable is mainly cultivated as a winter crop in the plains of North India and as a summer crop at the higher altitudes of Himachal Pradesh. It thrives best under cool climatic conditions and, therefore, early cultivation is mainly confined to the plains of the sub-mountainous Districts of Punjab comprising Ropar, Hoshiarpurand Gurdaspur. Having relatively low water requirements, pea holds a great promise for cultivation under 'KANDI' and 'BET areas. The peas grow best in sandy loam, well drained, friable and moderately acidic soils. Incidently this requirement is nearly met in this tract. Beacause of mild soil temperature prevalent during September in this tract the incidence of wilt and stemfly is not expected to be serious, which otherwise is a very serious problem for early pea cultivation in the plains. As a result of research work carried out, improved varieties of peas differing in maturity period have been developed. A brief account of important varieties which can be grown successfully in this tract are described as under.
