Coronary heart disease and its management

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is becoming greatest health hazard and is a leading cause of death in the world. About 40-50% of the total mortality in affluent society is caused by CHD. The frequency of heart attack is more common among men between theages of 30 and 40 but after 40 women are equally susceptible as men. Causes of CHD: Elevated level of blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) are the risk factors for heart disease. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity increase blood cholesterol and triglycerides and accelerate the process of atherosclerosis. Hypertension is a strong risk factor for cardiac and blood vessel damage and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Overweight particularly fat around abdomen, excessive consumption of alcohol, salt and fat especially saturated in nature are associated with hypertension.
