Advantages and use of drip irrigation for orchards

Normally orchard/fruit trees are irrigated by flood irrigation by making use of border strips. This is called surface irrigation method In surface irrigation water is carried from source (i.e. tubewell/ canal) to field through unlined irrigation channels and then water in border strips one by one. By this practice one fourth to one half water is lost below the root zone of the plants. Hence of the total water released from the source one half to three fourth water is utilized beneficially for growthof plants and fruits. Thus, for areas where water is becoming increasingly scare, it becomes important to use efficient method of irrigation.
