摘要

It is unfortunate that India wastes more fruits than those are consumed in U.K. Actual postharvest losses have been estimated to be as high as 25-40 percent amounting to Rs. 6000-7000 crores. If 10 percent of this could be saved by careful handling there will be a saving of Rs. 650 crores. India produces a wide range of fruits and vegetables and is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetable after China. It produces about 45 million tones of fruits and 89 million tones of vegetables. Owing of lack of production planning and climatic factors a huge accumulation of particular fruit take place in a particular area resulting in glut. Therefore, growers have to make distress sale and substantial quantity of the produce goes waste. It is unfortunate that India wastes more fruits than that are consumed in U.K. Hence it is necessary to have proper post-harvest handling and wide distribution system so that growers get remunerative prices and consumer pay less.
