Durum wheat is a crop of moderate climate. It is commonly used for making special products like macaroni, spaghetti, vermicelli, noodles, dalia, breads, chappatis. A great demand of durum wheat exists in the Mediterranean, north African and Middle East countries. THOUGH durum wheat is traditionally a crop of Central and Peninsular India, it presently covers about one percent of the wheat cropped area in the Punjab state. Punjab is in an advantageous position compared to other states as durum wheat cultivation in state is entirely irrigated and thus productivity is higher. Due to its special grain characteristics and freedom from seed borne diseases like loose smut and Karnal bunt, durum wheat has great export potential.
