THE amla is widely grown in tropical India as well as on the hill slopes upto elevation of 133 meters. It is known by several names in different parts of the country. A few of the local names arc Indian gooseberry, aonla, myrobalan, nelli, malacca tree and amlaki. Amla is known for its antipyretic, antioxi-dative, laxative, tonic antiviral and antibacterial properties. It is a good source of ascorbic acid (500 to 750 mg/gm of puip) and is mostly utilized as murabba, chutney and pickle preparations.
