The function of a hypothetical protein is determined through functional clues provided by structural comparisons with known proteins. Information on the phylogenetic distribution of protein folds has been provided by a number of hypothetical protein structures that were determined from model organisms. The gaps between protein structures and functions in the database have been filled by structural maps of the proteomes of model organisms. Methanobacterium thermoautotrophkum is a target organism for structural proteomics efforts. It survives in harsh environments such as hot springs and has the advantages of a completely known gene sequence, a lack of introns, and easy purification.
