In memoriam: Charles Tanford(1921-2009).

Charles Tanford was a character - he was consistently an individual in his life, his person and, supremely, his thought.The period immediately preceding and following the Second World War was remarkable for a group of physical chemists who became intrigued by questions of the structure, stability, and interactions of proteins in their native water. By relatively simple experiments, coupled with a firm grasp of physicochemical principles, people like Edwin Cohn, John Edsall, and Walter Kauzman laid a basis for the way in which we today approach and understand proteins in solution.
