The premise is straightforward: There is no board certification without an examination that tests for mastery of knowledge and competency in the field. And, there is no examination without highly relevant questions that are referenced and defensible. For this reason, item-writing workshops are held periodically by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC), which is the oldest and largest nationally accredited organization that certifies case managers. The workshops bring together certified case managers (CCMs) who are subject-matter experts in various aspects of a field that is broad and covers the entire continuum of health care, such as acute care, transitional care, workers' compensation, and behavioral health. The professional backgrounds and practice areas of the group reflect the breadth of case management today, as well as the diversity of CCMs who are currently in practice settings from insurance companies to hospitals to private practice.
