Productivity of biomass in leek and celeriac intercropping system.

The experiments were carried out in Skierniewice in 2005-2007. The effect of leek-celeriac intercropping system on biomass of crops and weeds was studied. Leek was planted at the distance of 10 or 20 cm in rows and celeriac 20 or 40 cm. Fresh, total weed biomass was evaluated 43-51 days after planting and before harvest. It was revealed that weed biomass in leek-celeriac intercropping was slightly lower than in pure stand cultivation. The highest total yield of leek cultivated in monoculture was comparative to the yield of leek cultivated in the intercropping system at plant spacing in a row: leek - 10 and celeriac 20 or 40 cm with herbicide application. The total yield of celeriac was almost the same regardless of the plant stand distances in the intercropping system. Relative Yield Total (RYT) calculated for intercropping cultivation ranged from 1.94 to 1.41. RYT could be used to estimate the optimum plant density and cultivation method simultaneously ensuring the highest crop yield.
