Efficacy of garlic extract in the control of Sitona spp. on pea.

Investigations based on field experiments were carried out in 2004-2006 on pea plants, cultivar Ramrod, at the Experimental Station of the University of Technology and Life Science (Bydgoszcz). The efficacy of garlic extract (Bioczos BR) in controlling Sitona beetles was compared to the chemical seed dressing with Super Homai 70 DS (thiophanate - 35%, thiuram - 20% and diazinon - 15%). The control treatment without seed protection was also included in this study. Both, the garlic extract (Bioczos BR) and the chemical seed dressing effectively protected pea plants against Sitona beetles compared to control plants (not protected). The indexes of damage were uniformly lower for pea (average more than 30 per cent points). Moreover, pea plants well protected by garlic extract or chemical seed dressing produced 33% greater biomass and 26% larger seed mass per plant than control ones.
